Elusive Brown Trout of the
Conway River

By Michael Hatfield

It has been said that when trout anglers
are asked why they fish for trout, the
answer is "because trout don't live in ugly
places." In my opinion, this is very true
when you talk about the Conway River.
The Conway is one of my favorite streams
because of the natural beauty of the
stream and the surrounding Shenandoah
National Park, as well as the beauty of the
trout that reside in the Conway's waters.
Springtime magnifies this beauty even more
with fresh green vegetation, colorful wild
flowers, abundant insect life and good
water flows.

Wounded Warriors
By Bruce Wilds

Rain pounded the canvas roof of the camper I was
attempting to sleep in. A series of bad thunderstorms was
sweeping through Suffolk, Virginia, and I was right in the
middle of it. I tossed and turned like a child on Christmas Eve
awaiting Santa's arrival.

East Coast Fish Populations:
Are We Victims of the "Shifting Baseline Syndrome"?

By Brandon White

I received a call from fishing buddy Wild Bill recently saying he was reading an article
in Smithsonian Magazine that was talking about how the size and numbers of fish have
decreased over the years. The senior editor, Laura, of the Smithsonian, printed pictures
of typical catches from a Key West boat named Gulf Stream in 1957 and again in 1958,
1983 and 2007. The boat has been updated to the Gulf Stream III, and runs from the
same slip.
The contrast in the catches is striking. If you have access to the Smithsonian, look at
pages 56 to 58 in the September 2008 issue for a pictorial of how the fishing has
changed. The catch in 1957 compared to 2007 is beyond startling.
Flounder Mania
By Lenny Rudow

For middle-Chesapeake floundering, this is
where you want to be.

Are you a fluke kook? And you say you
want to catch flatfish in the middle bay
region? This can be a tall order, but year
after year Eastern Bay produces some of
the best flounder fishing in the area. Where
you'll catch them often changes through the
season, but it's a sure bet that if you hit
these hotspots and use these techniques,
you'll soon drop a doormat or two into the
cooler.
